From "The Guardian" Archive-- Associated Press Collaborated With Goebbels' Nazi Propaganda Ministry
This is for those who read my recent piece on how Associated Press is sanitizing many of the worst Trump/MAGA figures in the US in order to make fascism acceptable through propaganda spin and managed news, using headline subliminal messaging to mislead us. They also print "human interest" stories about the fascists in order to make them seem normal, or "relatable." And of course, the point being that this is emphatically not a new thing. In case some thought this was hyperbole, exaggerated or entirely off the wall, this piece linked here is a good read.
It is a review of a book by Harriet Schamberg published in "The Guardian" six years ago documenting the symbiotic relationship and full collaboration by AP with Hitler's propaganda ministry throughout the 1930's, up until Pearl Harbor. Some might find this shocking, but not I.
My goal in raising this issue is not to just dredge up old history. It is to put a spotlight on the fact that many of the same institutions today, albeit with different ownership and public faces associated, are doing the same thing now. They are spinning a form of "friendly face" fascism without swastikas and toothbrush mustaches, downplaying the anti-semitic aspects in order to sell Hitler's program without Hitler. Except, targeted for removal are not just Jews and communists, but those who the Social Darwinists would characterize as being "unfit," or a "burden to society" that would be triaged in the event of the GOP's dismantling of the social safety net and constitutional protections built-in throughout the 20th Century.
The institutions which are "making America safe for fascism" are in many cases the ones which our citizens believe are "credible" because of their brand, which they in turn consult for fact checking the lying fascists! That's the ugly truth.
Our greatest difficulty in combating this is the refusal of the overwhelming majority to believe that it is indeed a conscious and intentional policy outlook. One can only compare it to the reactions of US personnel stationed in Pearl Harbor who when they saw the Japanese Air Squadrons flying overhead, thought it was a drill or war games.
Disbelief is the greatest threat we face. I'm here to help take that threat away. And that's why I'm not going away.
