Fired For Partying? Seriously? The Real Story Behind Johnson's "Bor-exit"
"Fired For Partying?" Seriously? The Real Story Behind Johnson's "Bor-exit".
Some folks have asked for my take on the UK. As far as Boris Johnson is concerned, there is more going on than meets the eye, not unlike a Chinese puppet show, where the actual actors are behind a screen, projecting silhouettes back-lit by glowing embers of a small fire.
The British Establishment has a long history of bringing out scandals of all sorts in order to orchestrate a "changing of the guard," in which their primary considerations are geo-strategic in nature, not the Tabloid nonsense which many imbibe in. In most cases they remove their PM's in order to align themselves properly with US policy, since the "Special Relationship" with the US is at the center of British politics. Johnson was brought in to essentially form a duo with Trump, capitalizing on the Brexit frenzy, and sounding Trumpian populist themes. They made the pragmatic move to install someone in office that Trump didn't hate as he did former PM Theresa May, a guy with even worse hair than he.
So, in order to stay in the US good graces for the next two years with Biden, they are pulling Johnson's plug, and therefore have dragged out this package of Tabloid fodder to do it.
There are other major factors equally unrelated to "Partygate". Because of Johnson's close association with Trump, he is not considered a reliable partner for the West in our current confrontation with Trump's pal, Putin. Johnson has not been cooperative with imposing sanctions or limiting otherwise the activity of Russian Oligarchs operating in London. There is a factional brawl about weaning the British banks off of Russian money, which is a huge component of their internal conflict, and a messy process. So there is that.
Additionally, the Monarchy and Commonwealth System are going through a convulsive transition. There is a succession underway as the post-Elizabeth era has already begun, with the coming reign of the despised Charles and his faux-Queen Camilla on the horizon. There is a real possibility that the combination of financial illegalities involving Charles philanthropies and the continuing stench of Andrew's Epstein association could lead to Charles being dumped early, and Prince William fast-tracked to the throne to put a new face on the Monarchy, that of the son of the beloved Diana, "The People's Princess".
There has been ongoing discussion of remaking and modernizing the Monarchy for two reasons. There has been growing popular resentment about their wealth, relative to their cost to British taxpayers. Secondly is that possibly a dozen or more nations are preparing to exit the Commonwealth when the Queen is gone, which changes their strategic role. The disastrous Caribbean vacay by William and Katherine earlier this year delivered that message loud and clear. Scotland might also declare independence, something brewing for many years.
So, there is massive turmoil ongoing, in which it becomes more important than ever for the British Establishment to make the needed changes to maintain the UK-US "Special Relationship", and there has been a plan for "changing of the guard" since the election of Biden, which really only needed a scandal to set it into motion. It is recognized that Johnson has all but renounced the US-UK long-time arrangement, Trump's personal promotion of Johnson notwithstanding.
If it hadn't been scandal about partying during covid restriction, they would have gone with Johnson's Barber being a Putin agent for the FSB, or something like that, or even dredged up an old Profumo style sex scandal. That's how they do it over there. Scandal or threat of scandal hitting the tabloids as leverage is a typical maneuver in their system.
The transition of the Monarchy carries more weight than most people realize. The political power of Buckingham Palace is greatly understated. It stands at the center of their Commonwealth System, which is a system of favored trade and financial relations and not simply symbolic of the former Empire. Adapting to these changes is what is driving British politics, not what we are reading about in the press. "Partygate"...seriously?
