The Upcoming Biden-Manchin Delaware Summit. Why Donkeys Won't Move When You Pull On Their Rope
(Photo-Biden and Schumer prepping for Manchin meeting)
You might remember hearing recently that there has been a shift with Biden personally since the Debt ceiling confrontation. If you did, you heard it here.
This CNN story (Link here) https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/10/24/politics/joe-manchin-chuck-schumer-delaware-joe-biden-spending-bill/index.html. is further confirmation that it is real and has potential. But at the same time, this "summit" between Manchin, Schumer, and Biden at the President's home in Delaware is likely to get nowhere.
Manchin is like Buckwheat. When the wind blows, he does not bend, he breaks. This meeting will be like a Steel Cage WWE Grudge Match, and Schumer will be wearing a black and white striped T-Shirt to officiate. The only difference is there won't be fake blood.
The meeting will end, and both will issue statements which sound like those released after the last Biden-Putin Summit, about how they had a "frank exchange of views" (which is code for attempted "clothesline" tackling, a "stepover toehold", followed by a "beanball" war like Baseball) and came to agreement on some matters of substance, but will be having further discussions to take up "unresolved issues still outstanding", or some warmed over crappola like that. They'll roll out some talking points about being on the same team, the Democrats being "family" which sometimes argues but is nevertheless unified, and other nauseating euphemisms to mask what really came out of the meeting. Zip. There may be a deal, which might or might not be supported by Sinema, but the social infrastructure side of it will be nothing relative to what it is needed, and will fuel a rebellion of Progressive Dems against the White House.
A loser of a deal will become the occasion for them to declare victory. Well, wait until 2022 and see if all the chickens they counted are there.
What is central is what the White House does after the meeting concretely, and whether Biden learned any lessons from FDR during his readings last year.
FDR had a rogue Senator in his own Party who hated the New Deal, and threatened to run against him for President in 1936 with the intent of shattering the Democratic Party out of sheer ambition and greed. This Senator was a Democratic Donald Trump. FDR used his Presidential Powers and Federal agencies to expose the corruption, greed, graft and cronyism of his enablers.
The Senator was Huey Long. Long was eventually shot by someone holding a personal grudge, but had he lived he was dangerous and unprincipled enough to have caused FDR major problems, and worse for the Nation and Democratic Party.
Let's see what FDR or LBJ type forms of "persuasion" Joe Biden can bring out and use on Manchin. Both are Catholic. Biden could think about channeling Torquemada and borrowing that stretching machine from his Chiropractor. You remember the old Monty Python skits on the Spanish Inquisition? Time for a little fear and surprise. 😋
