Joe "Knows" The Russian Role in Steering White Supremacist Terrorists, Even if He Won't Say It
This author writing in the Guardian (link below) is raising some important questions regarding Biden's approach to fighting "domestic violent extremism". His concern is that this term is too general, that the threat we face comes from the extreme Right and White Supremacists, rather than the whole hodgepodge including Left and Muslim and Green extremists, whose threat, he believes is overblown.
He also disagrees with Biden's designation of this threat as a Natiional Security threat, which assigns responsibility for combatting it to the Intelligence agencies, FBI, DHS, and Military. His concern is that we need more emphasis on enlisting private organizations to address root causes of people joining these groups.
That's all well and good, but wrong. Mr. Mudde has unfortunately chosen to omit the large body of investigative reports by his own publication, "The Guardian", documenting the extensive influence of Russian Intelligence in steering, training, funding, and harboring leaders of American Neo-Nazi groups in Russia itself. Why he makes this omission is not clear.
I'll just assert that Biden and his team know a great deal more than I about the Russian role in this, but have decided to keep it quiet. They are not prepared to publicly admit that Putin has instigated acts of war and sedition against the US. They do not want to risk US Russian relations spinning out of control, and prefer to handle this in a behind the scenes way, in conjunction with the Europeans. Biden also doesn't want to use the Russian involvement to round up militia members in the name of participating in a Russian Conspiracy, which would give his GOP adversaries a new line of attack on the administration for contriving an excuse to violate First Amendment activity. Biden is trying to "lower the temperature" and is very circumspect about what he is willing to say for that reason.
My criticism of this article, and in general, is that Right-Wing domestic terrorism is not entirely domestic. It is a National Securuty issue insofar as it is an aspect of Russian asymmetric warfare against the US, even if they are afraid to publicly characterize it as such.
The people in these violent Militias have the mindset of Hitler's Stormtroopers. They are enraged, semi-literate barbarian goons, broken individuals who have no more purpose in life than that of a mass shooter who intends to go out in a blaze of glory. We need Law Enforcenent and good Intel, not sociologists and academics to get ahead of this.
Otherwise, I'm confident in what I believe are the steps the Biden administration is taking. The Obama Administration started investigating White Supremacist terror groups in 2009, and when then AG Janet Napolitano made a public statement on this, she was slammed by the Right Wing of the GOP and actually apologized, then scaled back the investigations. In the name of "bipartisanship". (Referenced in the below article)
I believe that based on what he has both said, and not said so far, Joe will not make the same kind of mistakes again. Never forget that on the day of Trump's endorsement of the Nazi March in Charlottesville, he made up his mind to run for President. I'm not going to second guess him on this matter for that reason. As he said, "his whole soul is in this".
