I know people like Adam Kinzinger. It is very difficult to be raised in a Cult. It means that from childhood, your pathway, ideology, and emotional connections have been preordained, and are managed by others, either family or Church. Outside of your small group is a hostile world of infidels, non-believers, and enemies. And you have been relieved of the worldly burden of making your own decisions or forming your own thoughts.
You are told that seating in Heaven is limited, and to get in you have to adopt certain beliefs, behaviors, associates, and positions on issues. Jesus is turned into "Big Brother", watching you 24/7, judging every thought and action, punishing you with guilt and the threat of burning in Hell for all Eternity. And Jesus says and is whatever your Pastor and Sunday School teacher says he is. If you question anything said, you are told you are weak in your Faith.
You have been raised with the idea that everything is predestined, and you have no ability to change anything, including yourself, because God is in control, never you. And of course, it is self appointed autocrats and control freaks who invoke the name of Jesus to maintain this control. The ones with real power always have the "family card" to play, using the attachments and loyalty of family to exert maximum threat and leverage of ostracization to maintain control. They will organize families to do things like this letter sent to Kinzinger to use the threat of full exclusion from the family as a kind of terrorist threat, like a kidnapper holding a hostage to force them to recant and repent.
Don't believe for an instant that Kinzinger's parents or family initiated this letter. They were deployed to write it by higher ups in their Cult just like people throughout history under threat by Secret Police have made people rat out, inform on, or expel family members who criticize the leaders or regime. Ironically, the so-called Christian fundamentalists today employ the same methods as the KGB, Stasi of East Germany, and Chinese Communist Party to enforce conformity within their ranks.
Adam should reply to his family's letter by switching to Democratic, converting to Judaism, and announcing his Pansexuality. Even if he is fibbing. Send them all over the edge.
