On The Subject Of A "GOP Split"... Again--

On The Subject Of A "GOP Split"... Again--

(Photo-- GOP "moderate" positioning for 2023)

If there is a GOP "split," and I still react against using that word to describe it, I would say that it is a rear-guard form of action, a reflex, and desperate attempt by some (like the Bushes) to align with one or another likely Presidential candidate in the run up to the mid-terms. As Professor HCR says, on policy there is virtually no divergence.

It is not a real opposition to Trump. It is an attempt to tame him, but with the fatalistic resignation that he will be the GOP nominee again, who they will all endorse at the end. Why do I call it "desperate? Because they all know at some level that Trump is mentally ill, reckless, and dangerous, as are the people he surrounds himself with and is endorsing.

There is an effort to build up a small group of "not so Trumpy Republicans" to use them as leverage in a vain attempt to gain some control over him. They are deluded, and I think it is counterproductive to hope that these Republicans are going to help us to do our job, with all due respect. We need to focus on those things we can control, in my view.

Trump gets worse by the day. His Party has gone full fascist, and he runs it.  None of them will attack the Big Lie directly, or demand indictments for January 6th. They know that Trump controls four things that they don't. The fundraising lists. The Right-Wing Media. Blackmail files on most of them. And the ability to organize physical security threats against them if they resist too much.

So, some are hoping for a GOP split which the Democrats can exploit in the upcoming election. Some GOP leaders think they can chip away at his base and manage him. Some think this is a sign of life from Trump's GOP "moderate" opposition. I would instead compare this to the well known coroner's anecdote of corpses in the county morgue who would on occasion let out loud groans, due to the release of gases during rigor mortis.  I would hope we would not mistake the utterance of similar kinds of noises today for signs of life in the GOP.

My Response To A Readers Comment Who Thinks Trump Will Not Run Due To Age--

________he has to run, if only from a sheer ego standpoint. Plus he sees it as his legal shield, since the DOJ has a long standing policy of not indicting a Presidential candidate before an election in order to not appear politicized. More than anything, he needs the campaign fundraising machinery to generate the money for his legal defense fund. (Technically separate accounts, but same contributors)

His greed, ego, desperation to survive, his race hatred and rage have already made his decision for him. He needs the enraged and ecstatic audiences in front of him to be the resonator for his narcissism. The people who know him best, like Mary Trump, his biographers and inner circle, all agree that he is running. Most of us are scared of what will happen then,  and with good reason, so we are trying to wish him out of existence. That's not going to work. What might work is us getting ourselves organized and mobilizing as if our lives depend on it, because they do.
