No, Not All Unvaxxed Are Criminals, Just Trying To Be, Whether They Know It Or Not
The original title of this Slate article (linked below) was "Not All The Unvaccinated Are Criminals" When you click on it, the word Suspects is substituted for Criminal. Some editor came down on the writer, I believe.
The writer resorts to the sophistical trick of citing one particular example with unique features to construct and sell a fallacious argument and make sweeping generalizations. The effect of this headline is to confuse people, spread misinformation, and legitimize the arguments which have caused the latest tragic and lethal wave of hospitalizations and deaths.
Of course, not all those unvaxxed are criminals. However, some who are spreading disinformation to discourage others, and advocating quack cures resulting in poisoning or death certainly are criminal.
Those who publicly advocate against vaccination and later die of covid, leaving orphaned children behind are criminally negligent. Those parents whose children get sick.and die, or are permanently impaired, or spread it to others in school are also criminally negligent.
Those with jobs serving the public who are unvaxxed and unmasked, who infect their customers likewise.
Those who choose to not vax, get sick, and use up hospital bed space which causes denial of service to others who need hospitalization, who were responsible and were vaxxed are grossly negligent, bordering on criminal.
If convicted prisoners are being mistreated or denied proper care, that is a Human Rights violation, as well as a public policy failure. It should be addressed.
But the underlying argument and headline are dangerous, and feeds the anti-vaxxers talking points. The writer should tear his article up and rewrite it to make the point he intended, instead of creating sympathy for those who have a choice to get vaxxed, and refuse and risk spreading it to others because they have been led around by the nose by charlatans.
