"People See What They Want To See. Why Trump's 'Kompromat' Still Matters"
This article by Jonathan Chait in New Yorker is a perfect example of how Intelligence analysts, in and out of government, often make their worst assessments due to myopia, not dishonesty or incompetence. It is possible to get all of the facts right, be on the right side of history, and still draw entirely the wrong conclusions.
Read the article. He elaborates his track record of writings that Trump was compromised by Soviet/ Russian Intelligence as far back as 1987, in reference to the recent Book by Unger, and his interviews with forner KGB man, Yuri Shvets.
Chait gets it right on all of the signs and indicators that Trump was a Russian asset. He emphasizes that Shvets' revelations serve to confirm what he thought and wrote all along.
Then the kicker. He argues that it doesn't matter. Chait believes that because Trump is "Teflon", and nothing sticks, not the Mueller probe, the Impeachment probe, or any of his scandalous and treasonable capitulations to Putin, that therefore all of the revelations amount to nothing. Now, because he got away with it all, and ultimately the Russians plan (whatever that was) didn't work, and Trump was just a one term failure who lost, since he is finally gone, it really doesn't matter. Wrong. Full stop.
Putin and Trump created a "Fifth Column" of Neo Nazi terrorists, who are deployed as joint assets of both Putin and Trump, which are the Alt-Right Militias of the White Nationalist, Putin- loving insurrectionaries you all witnessed storming the Capitol. Many of the violent fanatical Trumpists groups have special relationships to Russian Intelligence. They represent a Trump/Putin "stay behind" network in the US, which is prepared to wage partisan style guerilla warfare against the US and the Buden Presidency. Think of the original "Operation Gladio" of NATO, set into motion in Europe in the 60'scand 70's. It was set up to create a "behind the lines" resistance force to a Soviet conventional forces move into Western Europe. These partisans would be engaged in sabotage of infrastructure, assassinations, disruption of occupation forces command and control, etc.
Trump is still operating as political cover and as a unifying figure for Putins Foreign Influenced Terrorist Entity in the violent Alt-Right. . It DOES matter that every existing avenue of investigation on Trump's "Kompromat" be pursued and brought out urgently.
January 6th was the beginning, not the end. Many of you have read my 45 page report documenting the Russian influence over the US and European Neo-Nazi Militias. The argument that "this is old news, nothing to see here, keep moving" is what I said at the beginning. It is myopia, and an example that it is possible to be factually correct and strategically way off. And it is a dangerous argument to fall for.
