The Importance of Former Chief of Staff John Kelly's Interview, Defense of Jim Mattis
June 5, 2020

Words are important. Someone of Kelly's stature, like George F. Will in his WAPO OP-Ed earlier in the week, spends hours, or days even, carefully constructing their public statements, in order to be crystal clear. No ambiguity, no hyperbole, nothing that can be deconstructed and used to undermine their essential message, and carefully calculated as a signal to other like minded individuals to step forward. Because they are not simply individuals, but have been delegated by the institutions they are associated with, they speak with extreme thoughtfulness and care, and intent. So, that said, Kelly did not say that Trump lied about the firing of Mattis. He did not say he is wrong. He said, " the President must have FORGOTTEN, HE MUST BE CONFUSED". Now, he is not saying this to give Trump a pass, or respect the Presidency. He could have just said he is mistaken, and left it at that. Using the words, forgotten, and confused, were deliberately formulated to publicly call into question Trump's mental health. Martha and I have a combined experience of 35 years in Dementia Care. The formulation used by Kelly in describing Trump are terms we would use to describe the mental health of a Dementia sufferer. So, think about that from the standpoint of our campaign to invoke the 25th Amendment. Kelly's rare but calculated public statement is an intervention to increase the attention and discussion of this. We are living in the middle of big history.
