 I think it's reasonable to form a few hypotheses.  First, is that Trump didn't expect or want to win the Presidency in 2016. He ran because his business Empire was failing, his debt and legal problems piling up, and he decided that the increased visibility of a campaign would upvalue his brand.  Second, narcissists feed upon adulation like an opium addict needs his next fix, and he always needs more. The Apprentice wasn't doing it for him anymore. Third, he actually thought he could run the Presidency like he ran his business, and everything implied by that. Blackmail, threats, hire the best fixers, payoffs, hidden behind a barrage of aggressive litigation or daring those he victimized to sue. Using his favored press to incite, cover up, to frame his opponents, to bury critical stories or revelations of his unethical and illegal activity. "Foreign  Policy" ran an important article, which was forwarded to me by a friend. I wrote the following in response, then thought it would be worthwhile sharing. The Democratic leadership completely failed to stop the Kavanaugh nomination. They focused on his college alcohol problem, and wanted to talk about him taking his Penis out at a Frat party while he was drunk. They failed to address the fact that he is an ideological fascist, who belongs to a Nazi Cult in the guise of a think tank for legal issues, called the Federalist Society, which advocates dictatorship in times of National emergency. .  The failed strategy for fighting Kavanaugh laid the groundwork for the failed Impeachment strategy, which was so impotent that even John Bolton was aghast.  The Democratic opposition to Trump has up til now chosen only "safe issues" on which to fight Trump. They have lost every battle, and chosen to avoid the ones that were winnable.   Not every Trump supporter is a hard core racist, though they may have racist tendencies and enjoy White Privilige. Many are greedy adherents to the philosophy of "Shareholder Value", in which they adopt the entitled and Social Darwinist view that their money and property is sacred, and granted to them by Divine Providence, Market forces, or their own superior ancestry.  These are the people who quietly and with subtlety have generated the "Us vs Them" social and cultural conflict. They brand anyone who has a social conscience, and believes in the US Constitutional injunction in it's Preamble to "Promote the General Welfare" as an UnAmerican, Communistic, Socialistic virtual traitor to the US. They believe that their "Leftist enemies", who are too lazy to work, who are "professional victims", are just schemers using Liberal Congressman who believe in "Big Government", to Tax them, to take away what God and their genetics ...

In 1993, PBS produced a 7 part documentary on "The Great Depression".  I strongly suggest that every citizen needs to watch this series, and discuss it.  The parallels to today are stunning. The loss of homes and farms, collapse of public services, homelessness and bankruptcy, civil and class conflict, starvation, mass unemployment, large scale demonstrations, rioting, and looting, political negligence, incompetence, the reckless and counterproductive deployment of the Army to violently suppress discontent in the population,  and the stubborn refusal to acknowledge reality by Herbert Hoover are all brought to life with incredible archival footage.  The most essential thing about this series and the period it covers is FDR's leadership which lifted the US up in this time of crisis, which also gives us a working model on steps to be taken now.
